To honor Captain Gregory W. Lash upon his retirement from the Columbus Division of Fire and recognize him for his 40 years of dedicated service to the City of Columbus.

WHEREAS, Captain Gregory W. Lash joined the Columbus Division of Fire on March 12, 1973 following his nine years of service for the Colerain Ohio Volunteer Fire Department beginning in 1964; and

WHEREAS, during his 40 year career with the Columbus Division of Fire, Captain Lash has worked on the Ladder Company at Station 8, the Emergency Squad at Station 21, the Rescue Company at Station 2, the Engine Company at Station 5, the Ladder Company at Station 15 and the Ladder Company at Station 1. Captain Lash was promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant in 1991 and Captain in 1993; and

WHEREAS, Captain Lash has dedicated much of his career to studying extensive firefighter training and rescue operations. He wrote the Division’s first Rescue Operations Manual and served as the Division’s expert in High-Rise Firefighting Tactics, Aerial Ladder Operations, Auto Extrications, and Elevator Rescue Operations; and

WHEREAS, Captain Lash has also worked to improve firefighting capabilities and firefighter safety by researching innovative tools and equipment for the Division. He was instrumental in the Division acquiring thermal imaging cameras, scene lighting, chain saws and hydraulic rescue tools, among others; and

WHEREAS, as a testament to his hard work and dedication, Captain Lash has received numerous awards, including three Battalion Chief Commendation Awards, two Distinguished Service Awards, two Fire Service Awards of Merit and the Civitan Badge of Honor Award from the Central Columbus Civitan Club; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his regular duties, Captain Lash has donated his time to caring for the sacred grounds that surround the Division’s Firefighters Memorial in downtown Columbus. He has also spent many off-duty hours landscaping the historic train station in Franklinton that serves a...
