To honor, recognize and celebrate the life and service of Kathlynne “Kathy” Bruce Duffy Espy and to extend our sincerest condolences to her family and friends on the occasion of her passing, Thursday, January 13, 2022.

WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we mourn the passing of Kathlynne “Kathy” Bruce Duffy Espy, of Columbus, Ohio. Kathy was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 29, 1944 and unexpectedly transitioned on January 13, 2022; and

WHEREAS, Kathy had a love and value for education, she graduated from The Ohio State University where she met her forever love, Ben Espy. Kathy and Ben were married on September 3, 1967 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, of her many accolades, which range from professional awards to humanitarian honors to praises sung by close friends, Kathy’s most prized possession was her family: Her husband of 54 years, Ben Espy and four beautiful and intelligent daughters, Beth, Amy, Laura and Lynette; and

WHEREAS, as our heart’s ache, we cannot go on without acknowledging all of the lives that she has touched throughout her years. Kathy’s life was one of great impact, Kathy was the most selfless person you could know. As a child, she was raised with a strong sense of community and taught that it is better to give than to receive. She mentored many people near and far and helped everyone achieve their greatness; and

WHEREAS, the first African-American member of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing Board of Trustees. One of the first black trustees for Ballet Met. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The Links, Inc., The Girl Friends Inc., The Sophisticates, Inc., The Carrousels, and Inc. The National Smart Set, Inc., the Coalition of 100 Black Women and Columbus Corporate Sisters; and

WHEREAS, Kathy was also a staunch supporter of women in politics. She was a member of the Matriots, a non-partisan political action committee that endorses, supports and encourages women to run and win...
