To Designate March 2023 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month”

 

Body

WHEREAS, while colorectal diagnosis and death rates have been declining for the past decade due to a concerted push for increased screening, it remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths within the U.S.; and

WHEREAS, as reported by National Cancer Institute, there were 151,030 estimated cases of colorectal cancer in 2023, of which about 52,580 resulted in a fatality; and

 

WHEREAS, it is particularly important for vulnerable communities to become aware since disparities in colorectal cancer screenings can lead to higher rates of death for these populations; and

 

WHEREAS, there is an increased risk of colorectal cancer for Black-Americans, those of Eastern European descent, individuals with inflammatory bowel syndrome, or a familial history of colorectal cancer; and

 

WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute has noted the recent rise in colorectal cancer diagnosis for young people is, in part, linked to unhealthy diets and physical inactivity; and

 

WHEREAS, colorectal cancer public awareness and education campaigns are held annually during the month of March; and

 

WHEREAS, educational efforts can provide the public with information on preventative measures and screening methods, as well as symptoms for early detection: Now, therefore, be it: and,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council and designates March 2023 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of Columbus, and encourages Columbus residents to observe the month with appropriate awareness and educational activities.
