To Designate March 2023 as “Kidney Disease Awareness Month”

WHEREAS, it is estimated that nearly 1 in 10 individuals experience Kidney Disease, including over 1.5 million Ohioans; and
WHEREAS, kidney disease is often triggered and worsened by other health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension; and
WHEREAS, increasing awareness of the potential risks for kidney disease and education about preventative steps to prevent disease progression is the best way to reduce further kidney-related complications; and
WHEREAS, children can also be burdened by kidney disease, requiring invasive and intensive medical follow-up, procedures, and sometimes dialysis and transplant; and
WHEREAS, kidney disease has been labeled an “invisible illness” due to its limited warning signs; and
WHEREAS, Kidney Disease Awareness Month is an avenue to recognize the importance of kidney health and celebrate the patients and families managing kidney diseases in their own lives; and
WHEREAS, educational efforts can provide the public with information on preventative measures and screening methods, as well as symptoms for early detection; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council designates March 2023 as “Kidney Disease Awareness Month” in the City of Columbus, and encourages Columbus residents to observe the month with appropriate awareness and educational activities.
