Explanation

This ordinance authorizes the City Clerk to enter into a grant agreement with the Columbus Urban League, a non-profit organization, to support their programming for young professionals through the Columbus Urban League Young Professionals (CULYP) organization.

The mission of the CULYP is to attract and retain young professionals in the Columbus area through a variety of personal and professional development and networking opportunities, as well as community and civic engagement efforts. Franklin County is one of the youngest counties in Ohio, making the work of the CULYP essential to a thriving professional population in Columbus.

Support from Columbus City Council will allow members of the CULYP to attend the National Urban League conference in Houston, Texas. The conference gathers some of the most impactful civil rights leaders and community activists from the across the country to advance America’s conversation about justice, opportunity, and the future of democracy. This opportunity will allow CULYP to continue to support the work of the National Urban League in developing new emerging leaders while providing professional development opportunities.

Emergency action is necessary to ensure the organization receives financial support in order to secure registration and lodging for the event, which takes place in mid-July.

Fiscal Impact: Funding is available within the Job Growth subfund.
