Title

 

To recognize the 36th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act and to celebrate the launch of the Center 4 dis-ABILITY Empowerment’s 2027 dis-ABILITY Pride Campaign. 

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990, marking 36 years since the codification of the world's first comprehensive civil rights law for individuals with disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS, the ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions, and increasing full participation in community life; and

 

WHEREAS, in the years following the passage of the ADA, disability advocates and activists have remained dedicated to furthering the work of changing attitudes towards and protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, building upon the work of those who fought for the ADA; and

 

WHEREAS, the Center 4 dis-ABILITY Empowerment (CdE) is a nonprofit organization that operates as a community-based, non-residential center that provides support and resources to individuals in the Columbus community with any disability; and  

 

WHEREAS, on July 9, 2026, the CdE celebrated their annual banquet, honoring the anniversary of the ADA, unveiling their reimagined brand identity, and launching their 2027 dis-ABILITY Pride Campaign; and

 

WHEREAS, CdE’s reimagined brand identity and 2027 dis-ABILITY Pride Campaign celebrates the past, embraces the present, and represents a commitment to building a more inclusive future; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2024, Columbus City Council codified the Columbus Advisory Commission on Disability Issues (CACDI), affirming its commitment to bringing greater visibility and attention to disability issues within the City; and

 

WHEREAS, CACDI advises the City on policies, programs, and services that affect individuals with disabilities and recommends strategies to improve accessibility and inclusivity in both public and private spaces; and

 

WHEREAS, in honor of the anniversary of the signing of the ADA, Columbus City Council celebrates and recognizes the progress that has been made, by reaffirming the principles of equality and inclusion and recommitting its dedication to supporting individuals with disabilities; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby recognize the 36th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act and celebrate the launch of the Center 4 dis-ABILITY Empowerment’s 2027 dis-ABILITY Pride Campaign.
