To honor and congratulate Rebecca Berroyer on her retirement as President of UFCW Local 1059 after 20 years of dedicated service.
 
 
 
Body
 
WHEREAS, Rebecca Berroyer has been a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1059 for 44 years and as President provided strong leadership to  union members for the past 20 years; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Berroyer increased membership of the UFCW Local 1059 by 50 percent and the organization now represents over 18,000 members in 47 counties in central, north-northwest, and south-southeast Ohio; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Berroyer is a member of the UFCW International Advisory Board and serves as the Vice President of the International Executive Board; and
 
WHEREAS, as President, Ms. Berroyer created the "Membership Assistance Program" which provides assistance to members in need and developed seven annual $1,500 college scholarships; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Berroyer serves as a trustee on four Taft Hartley Health Insurance and Pension Plans and the Central Ohio AFL-CIO; she is a member of the Rural Organizing Committee; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Berroyer has been an advocate for many community programs and organizations including the United Way, One New Toy, Dollars against Diabetes, Central Ohio Food Bank, Choices (Shelter for Domestic Abuse), Red Cross, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, NAACP, CLUW (Coalition for Labor Union Women), Jobs with Justice (JWJ), Womens Network, Circle of Sisters, Coalition for a Columbus Living Wage ordinance, and the Coalition for Responsible Zoning for Neighborhoods; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Berroyer has been nationally recognized for her political fundraising efforts and raised over $1 million for California Striking Workers in 2003-2004 through voluntary donations from the Local 1059 membership; and
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Berroyer is an avid supporter of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute and a lifelong supporter of political candidates who support working Americans; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby honor and congratulate Rebecca Berroyer upon her retirement as President of the UFCW Local 1059 and thanks her for her service and dedication to the Columbus community.
