Title
To proclaim October as Crime Prevention Month in the City of Columbus.
Body
WHEREAS, the quality of life in the City of Columbus, Ohio depends on how safe we keep our homes, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces and communities; and
WHEREAS, crime and fear of crime destroy our trust in others and in civic institutions, threatening the community's health and prosperity; with personal injury, financial loss and community deterioration resulting from crime are unacceptable and require investment from the whole community; and
WHEREAS, we must raise the awareness of people of all ages regarding crime prevention for themselves, their families, neighbors and co-workers from being harmed by crime by investing time and resources to support effective prevention and intervention strategies for youth and teens, engaging them in reducing crime in their communities; and
WHEREAS, crime prevention initiatives must include self-protection and security initiatives such as block watches, and must go beyond these measures to promote collaborative efforts to make neighborhoods safer for all ages and to develop positive opportunities for young people; based on effective crime prevention programs that excel due to partnerships among all communities; law enforcement, government, civic groups, schools, faith, businesses and individuals that nurture communal responsibility and instill pride; and
WHEREAS, as the Safety Chair of Columbus City Council, of Columbus, Ohio, I ask that all residents, government agencies, public and private institutions and businesses invest in the power of prevention and work together to make this great City of Columbus, Ohio a safer, stronger, more caring community; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby proclaim October, 2004 as CRIME PREVENTION MONTH in Columbus, and urge all members of our community to join in recognition of this significant occasion.
