Explanation

This ordinance authorizes Columbus City Council to enter into a grant agreement with J. Jireh Development Corporation in support of the Safe in My Brother’s Arms & Safe in My Sister’s Arms programs.

SIMBA/SIMSA (Safe In My Brothers Arms & Safe In My Sisters Arms) is a non-profit organization which targets at-risk boys & girls between the ages of 8-17. The Simba Circle initially began in 1993 as an Africentric camping experience for at-risk, inner-city boys from Chicago, but eventually expanded to include youth and mentors from other cities, such as Columbus, Ohio. The Columbus Chapter of SIMBA/SIMSA was established in 1999 and is coordinated by everyday community leaders.

J. Jireh Development Corporation will utilize funding to provide scholarships for 20 local youth ($75 per student), to participate in the annual SIMBA/SIMSA “2018 Gala and Reunion.”  In addition, funds will be used to support students on upcoming camps and programs sponsored by SIMBA/SIMSA. This event will create a space for listening, teaching, and responding to the needs of young African-American males and females determined to release their potential, restore their promise, and rescue their gifts.

SIMBA/SIMSA Circle works to increase the youth’s relationship skills and help them to cope with society’s pressures to engage in inappropriate behaviors. The youth participate in team building activities that encourage them to connect with other youth and adults as well as to overcome fears.

Fiscal Impact: Funding is available within the Neighborhood Initiatives subfund.
