To honor, recognize and celebrate the life of Curtis J. Moody Sr., 1950-2024

WHEREAS, Curtis J. Moody Sr. was born on December 28, 1950 and grew up on the Northside of Columbus with his late parents William and Jessie Moody, attending Weinland Park Elementary, Indianola Middle School, North High School and The Ohio State University, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in architecture; and
WHEREAS, Moody was a founding partner of Moody Nolan, the country’s largest African American owned and managed architecture firm, employing more than 350 employees across a dozen offices across the United States; and
WHEREAS, Moody was a prolific member of the architect and minority business communities, working on or directly designing: the Ohio Union; Schottenstein Arena; Wexner Medical Center; Chicago Home Court for President Barack Obama; Nashville Music City Center; Karl Rd and MLK libraries; Wintrust Arena; International African American History Museum; and the new terminal at John Glenn International Airport; and
WHEREAS, Moody prided himself over his work with historically Black colleges and universities, working on projects at Ohio Central State University, Morehouse University, Howard University, and Morgan State University, producing an iconic and visionary legacy of work; and
WHEREAS, social issues relating to homelessness were also a core part of Moody’s career, conceiving and establishing the Legacy House Project, providing no-strings attached housing for individuals experiencing homelessness across the United States; and
WHEREAS, Moody achieved many prestigious awards such as the Architectural Ohio Gold Medal Firm of the Year award, Whitney M. Young Jr. Award for Social Responsibility, as well as Moody Nolan’s achievement of AIA’s Firm of the Year in 2021, the first African American led firm and first Ohio firm to receive the award; and
WHEREAS, the City of Columbus extends its sincere condolences to the friends and family of Curtis J. Moody Sr., including wife, Elaine of 44 years, children, Curtis Jr., David, and Johnathan, as well as countless other friends, business partners, and family, across Columbus and beyond; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby honor, recognize, and celebrate the life of Curtis J. Moody Sr.
