To recognize and honor the Columbus Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on their support and service to the Columbus Community through the Be The Light Initiative

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., is an organization of college educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community. The private, non-profit organization’s purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. These women of vision wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Despite the tremendous risk, the Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., performed their first public act by marching in the historic Women’s Suffrage Procession in Washington D.C. on March 3, 1913. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was the only African American women’s organization to participate in the march; and
WHEREAS, The members of the CAC strive to continue the legacy of sisterhood, scholarship and service. Their Annual Be The Light Initiative, provides a platform to shine a light and bring awareness on issues that disproportionately affect our community in an effort to raise our collective voice and speak truth to power; and
WHEREAS, Now more than ever, we must stand up against depression, human trafficking, suicide and every other ism that aims to put women in a box. The women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are bold, confident, educated, determined leaders that will continue to fight for not only this generation, but for the future generation of leaders to come. ; and
WHEREAS, on March 2, 2019, this Columbus City Council and the Columbus Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc will light the City Hall in red, as a symbol of unity and support for our entire city to Be A Light; and
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby recognize and honor the Columbus Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on their support and service to the Columbus Community through the Be The Light Initiative
