Title
To support I Know I Can's 15th Special Edition newspaper sale on September 15, 2005 to raise funds to give to qualified Columbus Public School students by renaming the corner of Front and Broad Streets as I Know I Can Street the week of September 12 - September 16, 2005.
Body
WHEREAS, September 15, 2005 will mark I Know I Can's 15th Special Edition Newspaper Sale which will take place from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in downtown Columbus; and
WHEREAS, thanking the I Know I Can volunteers who annually donate more than 9,000 hours of service to the program; and
WHEREAS, in 2004 the Newspaper Sale volunteers significantly impacted the lives of our city's youth and their families by raising more than $70,000 for college educations; and
WHERAS, since 1988 I Know I Can's founding belief of the program is that every child who wishes to pursue higher education should have the opportunity to do so and should not be denied that right because of his or her economic status; and
WHEREAS, on average, the students earn $4,400 a year, most of which goes to help pay for their college educations; and
WHEREAS, 64 percent of the Columbus City School District's 62,000 students qualify for free or reduced price meals, indicating the low economic status of the student population; and
WHEREAS, 41 percent of the students attend Greater Columbus colleges and universities, more than 87 percent attend colleges and universities in Ohio and the majority of students are first generation college students; and
WHEREAS, in its 15th year, I Know I Can has served more than 47,000 students through college admissions and financial aid counseling; and
WHEREAS, the newspaper sale sponsors are Fifth Third Bank and Abercrombie & Fitch, and
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does support I Know I Can and thanks all the board members, staff members, volunteers and sponsors who contribute so much to help Columbus' students to achieve a higher education and the renaming the corner of Front and Broad Streets I Know I Can Street the week of September 12 - September 16, 2005.
