To recognize, honor and congratulate Columbus Division of Fire Chief Ned Pettus, Jr. on being named the Metropolitan "Metro" Fire Chiefs Association Fire Chief of the Year.

WHEREAS, The Metropolitan "Metro" Fire Chiefs Association, a section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), held its 2009 annual conference in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, June 21-26, 2009; and
 
WHEREAS, during the conference, the Metro Chiefs honored Columbus Division of Fire Chief Ned Pettus, Jr. as the Metropolitan Fire Chief of the Year; and
 
WHEREAS, this prestigious award defines his outstanding leadership and service recognized by his peers and the fire service community globally; and
 
WHEREAS, Chief Pettus, a 32-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Fire, was recognized for his service, dedication and personal and professional commitment to the citizens of Columbus; and
 
WHEREAS, Chief Pettus has initiated a number of programs in the Columbus community that impact the safety of civilians and firefighters; and
 
WHEREAS, his accomplishments include being selected by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for the Urban Fire Safety Initiative, through which Columbus Fire partnered with NFPA on reducing injuries and providing education to elderly residents in the city; and
 
WHEREAS, the Division also received international accreditation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE), and is the second largest fire department to achieve this standard; and
 
WHEREAS, Chief Pettus continues to work to make The Columbus Division of Fire the best fire department in the country through his innovative efforts in working with national, state and local organizations; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby recognize, honor and congratulate Columbus Fire Chief Ned Pettus, Jr. on being named the Metropolitan "Metro" Fire Chiefs Association Fire Chief of the Year.
