Columbus City Council will conduct a public hearing on Wednesday - December 18, 2024 at 5:00pm in Council Chambers to hear feedback from the public on the list of finalists being considered for the vacancy created by the departure of Councilmember Shayla Favor (District 7).
- Finalists may, but are not required to, offer three (3) minutes of remarks.
- If you would like to provide written or public testimony, including signing up to speak at the hearing, email Kevin McCain at kbmccain@columbus.gov.
- Written testimony must be received by 3:00pm on the day of the hearing and should be emailed to Kevin McCain at kbmccain@columbus.gov - please include “written testimony” in the subject line of your email.
- Any resident wishing to speak during the hearing should email Kevin McCain at kbmccain@columbus.gov. Public speakers will be called in the order of receipt and will be given three (3) minutes to address Council. Remarks should be limited to the subject of finalists being considered to fill the vacancy on Council. Standard rules for speaking before Columbus City Council apply.
- At the conclusion of the hearing, Council may enter into executive session to discuss candidates and public testimony. No straw polls or votes may be taken during executive session.
The hearing will broadcast live on CTV, YouTube, and Facebook Live.
In a memo to City Councilmembers, Council President Shannon Hardin provided an outline of the timeline and process to fill the vacancy. Applicants must apply at columbus.gov/councilvacancy by Monday, December 9, 2024 at 12:00pm, which will be filed with the City Clerk pursuant to Columbus City Code section 111.35(A). Only applications received after November 14 and before the December 9 deadline will be considered. Following the application closure, Councilmembers will select and submit a list of finalists to the City Clerk by December 12, 2024.
During a Council meeting in early 2025, Councilmembers will formally nominate applicants for the vacancy and vote to appoint a new member. If a majority of Councilmembers vote to appoint a nominee, they will then be eligible to be sworn in under oath and take office pursuant to Section 5 of the City Charter and Section 111.35 of Columbus City Code. The appointed nominee from District 7 will serve the remainder of Councilmember Favor’s term, which expires in December 31, 2025.
