To honor, recognize, and celebrate the life of the late Antonio C. Yap and to extend sincere condolences to his family and friends on the sorrowful occasion of his passing.
Body
WHEREAS, Columbus City Council extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Antonio C. Yap on the sorrowful occasion of his passing, Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap, born on June 13, 1933 to Martina and Crescencio Yap in Romblon, Philippines, was one of 13 children, and was left an orphan at the age of six; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap was raised by his eldest sister, Felicitas Chua, and brother-in-law, Mateo, who encouraged him to be a physician; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Manila Central University with his Doctor of Medicine degree, Dr. Yap came to America in 1963, earned U.S. citizenship in 1971, and started a private practice in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap served as Chief of Pediatrics for Flower and Mercy Hospitals, and served on the medical staff of St. Luke's, St. Charles, St. Vincents, Toledo Childrens' and Toledo Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap was recognized for his outstanding 20 years of service to Mercy Hospital, 25 years of service to St. Luke's Hospital, and 30 years of service to Flower Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap cared for approximately 20,000 infants, children and adolescents over the years, and some patients were children or grandchildren of those he served early in his medical career; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap was a founding member of the Special Commission on Relief and Education, a philanthropic group which provided medical care to underserved areas of the Philippines; and
WHEREAS, an active advocate for health care reform, Dr. Yap lived his life by the principle that others always come first, and ran for State Representative in 1996 with the slogan "People Not Politics;" and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap's smile, charisma and contagious laughter were gifts to all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Nilza; daughters, Antoinette Wilson and Yvonne Donaldson; sons, Gil and Eric; sisters, Felicitas and Leticia; brother, Dominidor, and three grandsons; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Yap left an indelible impression on the people whose lives he touched, and a legacy of service for which he should be recognized, and in which his loving family can take pride; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby honor, recognize, and celebrate the life of Antonio C. Yap, and extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends on the sorrowful occasion of his passing.
