To celebrate and commend Green Columbus for their Annual Earth Day Event in Columbus, Ohio.

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, celebrating Earth Day represents all of the hard work that has been done and will continue to be done to protect our planet and keep our families safe. In 2026, Earth Day’s theme is OUR POWER, OUR PLANET; and

 

WHEREAS, Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970; and

 

WHEREAS,Green Columbus is a Central Ohio nonprofit organization that started the local celebration of Earth Day in 2007 and organizes the Earth Day Columbus service month every year. Since its inception, Earth Day Columbus has helped Central Ohioans volunteer hundreds of thousands of hours and resulted in millions of dollars worth of goods and services being donated in Central Ohio; and

 

WHEREAS, since 2019, Green Columbus has distributed thousands of free native trees from our community nurseries located on Columbus Land Bank properties; and

 

WHEREAS, this year, Green Columbus is supporting over 100 volunteer events through out the month of April, which will engage thousands of volunteers through out the city; and

 

WHEREAS, Green Columbus has planted over 300,000 trees in the region since 2007; and

 

WHEREAS, Green Columbus will host their Annual Earth Day Event on Sunday, April 26 from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm at the Scioto Audubon Metro Park; and

 

WHEREAS, organizations, such as Green Columbus, continue to push the City of Columbus to look at all policies and initiatives through a sustainability lens; and

 

WHEREAS, Columbus City Council encourages all residents to volunteer for throughout 2026 and thank the many people and organizations in our community who will spend all year dedicating time to plant trees, clean their neighborhoods and help our environment; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby celebrate and commend Green Columbus for their Annual Earth Day Event in Columbus, Ohio.
