To recognize and commend Fire Battalion Chief Robert D. Jackson for his 37 ½ years of distinguished service to the City of Columbus on his retirement from the Columbus Division of Fire on May 18, 2011.

WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Robert D. Jackson became a fire fighter in on October 1, 1973 and has worked his way up through the ranks during his distinguished 37 ½ year fire service career with the Columbus Division of Fire; and
WHEREAS, as a recruit, Battalion Chief Jackson was the first African American to be permanently assigned to Fire Station 16 where he remained for three years; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Jackson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1989, to Captain in 1995, and Battalion Chief in 1998 and over his career was assigned to stations throughout the city; most recently serving as the in-charge officer for Battalion 3 on 1unit which serviced the Short North, the Ohio State University and the Linden area; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Jackson also served as the Division of Fire's Health and Safety Officer for seven years and was the Division's Liaison Officer with Clinton Township Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Jackson has had numerous accomplishments during his 37 ½ year career with the Columbus Division of Fire including a Battalion Chiefs Commendation for his leadership during a 3rd alarm fire on the 36th floor of the Rhodes State Office Tower; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Jackson was also recognized for traveling to cities throughout the United States and serving as an Assessor which assisted fire departments in the selection of new fire officers in their promotional process; and
WHEREAS, Battalion Chief Robert D. Jackson retired on May 18, 2011 after 37 ½ years of commendable service to the citizens of Columbus with the Columbus Division of Fire; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this council does hereby recognize and commend Battalion Chief Robert D. Jackson for his 37 ½ years of dedicated service to the City of Columbus on his retirement from the Columbus Division of Fire on May 18, 2011.
