To Recognize and Celebrate Janet Jackson as a Distinguished Honoree of the 2024 Columbus Urban League Herstory Makers Event

WHEREAS, Thursday, May 16, 2024 is the Columbus Urban League’s annual Herstory Makers signature event, which will honor eight trailblazing women in Central Ohio; and
WHEREAS, Janet E. Jackson spent 14 years as president and CEO of United Way of Central Ohio, one of the largest United Way organizations in the country and she was the first woman and the first Black person to lead the organization; and
WHEREAS, Prior to coming to United Way, Jackson served six years as the Columbus, Ohio City Attorney, a first for a woman in Columbus and her election to that office was also a first for a Black person in Columbus; and
WHEREAS, Jackson served nearly ten years as a Franklin County Municipal Court judge, making her the first Black female judge in Franklin County history. She holds a B.A. degree from Wittenberg University and a J.D. degree from The National Law Center at George Washington University; and
WHEREAS, In April 2021, Jackson was selected by City of Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther to chair Columbus’ first Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB), which provides civilian oversite of police for the first time in the city’s history; and
WHEREAS, Jackson has accumulated an impressive number of honors and awards that include the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame, Woman of Achievement Award from the YWCA, the Dr. MLK Jr. Humanitarian Award, and more; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council recognizes and celebrates Janet Jackson as a Distinguished Honoree at the 2024 Columbus Urban League Herstory Makers Event.
