To Celebrate Somalia's Independence Day and Recognize the Raising of the Somali Flag at the Ohio Statehouse

 

Body

WHEREAS, Somalia’s Independence Day is celebrated on the 1st of July, commemorating the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic on July 1st of 1960; and

WHEREAS, on July 1st, the strength of the Somali people despite the brutality of European colonization is recognized and celebrated among Somali communities; and

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus is proud to be home to the second-largest Somali community in the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the Somali community of Columbus has contributed immensely to the culture and diversity of the City of Columbus; and

WHEREAS, the Somali flag, composed of a single white five-pointed star on a cyan field, represents both the nation of Somalia and the millions of Somali people who live outside of Somalia; and

WHEREAS, on July 1st of 2023, the Somali flag will be raised outside of the Ohio Statehouse to recognize Somalia’s Independence Day; and

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus will also be celebrating Somalia’s Independence Day and recognizing the tremendous impact that Somali people have had on Central Ohio; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council celebrates Somalia’s Independence Day and recognizing the raising of the Somali flag at the Ohio Statehouse
