To Recognize June 2023 as Caribbean American Heritage Month
Explanation
WHEREAS, Caribbean American Heritage Month was first recognized by the Federal government in 2006, with this June marking the 17th National Caribbean American Heritage Month; and,
WHEREAS, Caribbean American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the accomplishments and history of Caribbean Americans, and appreciate the diversity of cultures within the community; and,
WHEREAS, the Caribbean American population continues to grow through immigration to the United States, and Columbus, through “Immigrants Make Columbus,” notes the importance of continuing to welcome and support immigrants into the community, including those of Caribbean origin; and,
WHEREAS, 2017 marked the first time Caribbean American Heritage Month was celebrated within Columbus with the inaugural Columbus Caribbean Festival, an event which seeks to bring the culture and heritage of the Caribbean islands to Central Ohio; and,
WHEREAS, this year’s Columbus Caribbean Festival marks the event’s 6th iteration, with activities including: Caribbean Community Day, Caribbean Storytime, Caribbean Music Classes, Caribbean Happy Hour, and Caribbean Dance Program, among others; and,
WHEREAS, Columbus acknowledges that diversity is a strength, and its Caribbean American population remains a pillar of the community; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby recognize the month of June 2023 as Caribbean Heritage Month and recommends residents celebrate with the appropriate cultural activities and educational efforts.
