To recognize the partnership of the Commission on Black Girls and Brown Girls Mentoring working together to improve the quality of life Black Girls and celebrate October 11, 2023, as the International Day of the Girl in the City of Columbus.

WHEREAS, The concept of the International Day of the Girl first began as a part of the World Conference on Women in Beijing, China held in 1995, this day of observation highlights explicitly the gender inequality that begins to make an appearance in their early adolescent years through adulthood - many of these challenges include their legal rights, access to educational resources, protection from discrimination as well as violence against women, medical care, nutritional guidance, and forced child marriage; and,
WHEREAS, The United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 on December 19, 2011, declaring October 11 as the International Day of the Girl, recognizing the rights of girls and the unique challenges facing girls globally; and,
WHEREAS, The International Day of the Girl encourages the empowerment of girls and ensures their fundamental rights to freedom, as well as protecting their human rights. It is believed that this level of support provided during their critical formative years, guides our youth into their full untapped potential, with this movement highlighting the need for a more equitable and prosperous future, spearheading our youth into being empowered girls of today, and groundbreaking leaders of tomorrow; and,
WHEREAS, On July 16, 2018, Columbus City Council adopted resolution number 0208X-2018 to create the Commission on Black Girls Led by then City Councilmember Priscilla Tyson - The Commission's focus is to change the life trajectory of Black women starting early in the lives of Black girls to create opportunities to improve their futures; and the Commission on Black Girls has transitioned to the Department of Neighborhoods continuing its work to advance equity for Black girls...
