To recognize and designate October 2023 as Crime Prevention Month in Columbus, Ohio.

Body
WHEREAS, National Crime Prevention Month began in 1984 to encourage U.S. residents to take part in their community’s crime prevention efforts; and

WHEREAS, preventing crime and de-escalating violence are a critical role of the City of Columbus, our residents, businesses, and civic partners; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of National Crime Prevention Month is to address the causes of crime and empower individuals to take action in their communities to prevent crime; and

WHEREAS, by focusing on crime prevention, the City of Columbus and its residents can reduce reliance on police and focus more efforts on alternative crisis responses and community response efforts; and

WHEREAS, through this resolution, Columbus City Council pledges to work with local, regional, and national partners such as the National Crime Prevention Council to reach these goals; and

WHEREAS, with this resolution Council designates October as Crime Prevention Month; and

WHEREAS, an overwhelming majority of 88% of all 2023 homicides in Columbus were committed with firearms and felonious assaults are also up, with 870 as of August 1, 2023, compared to 796 in 2022. The City of Columbus is committed to improve safety one home at a time by offering gun buyback events, giving away free gun cable locks and lock boxes, and focusing this month on crime prevention; and

WHEREAS, Columbus, Ohio is committed and invested in crime prevention efforts. The City has passed local gun regulations, held rallies for common sense gun reform, and invested millions of dollars in prevention and intervention programs this year; now, therefore
