To honor the memory of Mrs. Vicki Speakman and to recognize the sixth annual Celebrate! event in honor of her memory.
Body
WHEREAS, Mrs. Vicki Speakman, during her battle against breast cancer, encouraged her family and friends to "celebrate and take care of one another."; and
WHEREAS, her brother Mr. Miguel Perez, Affiliate President of the Susan G. Komen Columbus Race for the Cure, organized the first annual Celebrate! event in 2002 to honor his sister's request; and
WHEREAS, the Celebrate! event is not intended to memorialize Vicki Speakman, but instead to keep her spirit alive by providing a wonderful evening of family, friends, entertainment and dancing; and
WHEREAS, the event's proceeds are placed into the Vicki Speakman Memorial Fund which is focused on the support of breast cancer awareness, education, research, and programs; and
WHEREAS, the organization, in collaboration with the Susan G. Komen For the Cure and the Young Survival Coalition, has established the Vicki Speakman Memorial Scholarship for young Survivors; and
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby recognize the sixth annual Celebrate! event and does join in celebration with the community as we work towards the noble goal of ending this devastating disease called breast cancer.
