To recognize the New Directions Career Center and to support Women of Promise.

WHEREAS, each year, New Directions Career Center honors one of its graduates who has gone above and beyond in her career success by overcoming significant obstacles and who now serves as a role model not only for other women but for the community at large.  She is honored at Women of Promise, the Center's signature fundraising event in April; and
 
WHEREAS, for the past 27 years, each Woman of Promise recipient is celebrated for achieving great things along her career path since graduating from the New Directions class.  At the event, the honoree shares her story about the challenges and barriers she has overcome to become a productive woman in the Columbus workforce; and
 
WHEREAS, since its inception in 1980 by the City of Columbus, New Directions Career Center has helped more than 65,000 women in their quest to become economically self-sufficiency for them and their families.  Program participants work in a class setting and in one-on-one sessions with licensed, clinical counselors to uncover and overcome barriers to significant economic advancement; and
 
WHEREAS, the 2008 Woman of Promise recipient is representative of the thousands of women in Columbus each year who look to attain and maintain quality jobs with a living wage; and
 
WHEREAS, this year's Woman of Promise event will be held on Thursday, April 24th at The Fawcett Center on the campus of The Ohio State University; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That Columbus City Council recognizes the New Directions Career Center and supports this year's Woman of Promise.
