Explanation

BACKGROUND:

This legislation authorizes and directs the Division of Fire to purchase two sets of combination rescue tools and related equipment to speed emergency rescue services to accident scenes. Council member Michael Mentel has been working with the division and Local 67 to review existing resources and heavy rescue operations. The additional tools will be purchased with a portion of the $2 million Public Safety Initiatives fund created by Council in its 2005 budget amendments.

Emergency action is requested to expedite the deployment of additioanl life-saving equipment.

Bid Information: Competitive bids will be solicited for this purchase.


FISCAL IMPACT:

City Council set aside $2 million in its 2005 amendments for Public Safety initiatives. This ordinances taps $21,000 of that amount.

Body

WHEREAS, Council member Michael Mentel has been working with the Division of Fire and Local 67 to review the division's heavy rescue operations and resources, and as a result of that work, now recommends the purchase of additional combination resuce tools and realted equipment that can accelerate response to certain emergency situations; and

WHEREAS, City Council set aside $2 million in its 2005 budget amendments for Public Safety initiatives; and

WHEREAS, the Division of Fire will solicit bids for this purchase, and will select the lowest, best and most responsive firm; and

WHEREAS, an emergency exists in the usual daily operation of the Department of Public Safety, in that it is immediately necessary to purchase said equipment, for the immediate preservation of the public health, peace,...
