To recognize September 9-15 as National Suicide Prevention Week and September 10, 2007 as World Suicide Prevention Day.

WHEREAS, Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages 18 and 65 in the United States and the third leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15 and 24; and
WHEREAS, 127 people in Franklin County committed suicide in 2005, which represents more than two people every week; and
WHEREAS, Columbus is one of 100 cities in the United States that has organized an Out of Darkness Community Walk event to bring together survivors of suicide loss and people affected by depression; and
WHEREAS, funds raised from the Out of the Darkness Community Walk on September 9, 2007 at Fred Beekman Park on the Ohio State University's west campus will support both local and national suicide prevention research and programming; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That Columbus City Council does hereby recognize September 9-15 as National Suicide Prevention Week and September 10, 2007 as World Suicide Prevention Day.
