To congratulate Woodland Christian Church for celebrating their 90th Church Anniversary.

WHEREAS, Woodland Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, was established in 1918.   Woodland Christian Church, formerly Monroe Christian Church is located at 143 Woodland Ave.  Woodland Christian Church has 90 years of continuous service; and   
 
WHEREAS, Woodland Christian Church has a long history of fighting against injustice.  In the early 1950's Woodland Christian led by the Rev. L. L. Dickerson, waged a 4 year legal battle against the practice of Restrictive Covenants.  This legal case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court.  The Supreme Court rendered a landmark decision in favor of the church.  As a result of the church's commitment, African Americans can now buy property any where they wish, in the city of Columbus; and
 
WHEREAS, Woodland Christian Church continues to be committed to making a positive impact in our church, in our community, in our nation and in our world.    Woodland was awarded the Golden Ruler Award by the Columbus City School Board for its support of the Columbus City Schools.  Woodland has hosted health fairs, made hats and scarves for the needy, donated school supplies and hosted a community carnival; and
 
WHEREAS, Woodland Christian Church has been led by Rev. L.L. Dickerson, Rev. Ozark Range, Sr., Rev. A.T. Miller and the current Pastor is the Dr. Eric Brown; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby congratulate Woodland Christian Church for celebrating their 90th Church Anniversary on Sunday, November 2, 2008.
