Title
             To honor the Mentoring Center of Central Ohio and declare January 2006
              National Mentoring Month.
 
Body
 
WHEREAS, the City of Columbus supports the continuation of National Mentoring Month being observed in Ohio during January 2006 and its annual celebration as an important step for our country's young people; and
 
WHEREAS, studies show that mentors help young people succeed through on-going relationships built on listening, care and support; and
 
WHEREAS, public schools and over 40 youth-serving agencies in Franklin County benefit from the active involvement of mentors in the lives of children and youth; and
 
WHEREAS, more than 1,000 children in Central Ohio urgently need--and are waiting for a mentor--and National Mentoring Month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the value of mentoring, of volunteer opportunities, mentor-training, and the benefits of being a mentor; and
 
WHEREAS, this effort is being led by the Mentoring Center of Central Ohio, the 40 state and local partnerships which are members of MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership and by the Harvard Mentoring Partnership; and
 
WHEREAS, National Mentoring Month has the support of the White House and Congress as well as commitments from all major television networks; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby designate January 2006 as National Mentoring Month in Columbus, Ohio, in conjunction with the state-wide and national observance.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be presented to the Executive Director of the mentoring center of central Ohio as a token of our esteem.
