To recognize and celebrate September 15, 2023, to October 15, 2023, as Latino Heritage Month in the City of Columbus

 

 

Body

 

WHEREAS, from September 15 to October 15 each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions and cultural diversity of Hispanic/Latino/Latinx Americans whose heritage is rooted in over 20 Latin American countries and territories; and

WHEREAS, Latine is a completely gender neutral term in Spanish, and Hispanic Heritage Month was first recognized by President Lyndon Johnson as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan; and

WHEREAS, the national theme of Hispanic Heritage Month in 2023 is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation,” which reinforces the need to ensure diverse voices and perspectives are welcomed in decision-making processes, thereby helping to build stronger communities and a stronger Nation; and

WHEREAS,  in 2022 the Columbus Latino Heritage Committee was formed by the Office of Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla to amplify, celebrate, and further local Latino culture in the city of Columbus. 

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus benefits from the diversity of its residents, and Latin Americans continue to contribute to the cultural and economic vibrancy of its communities; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby recognize and celebrate September 15, 2023, to October 15, 2023, as Latino  Heritage Month in the City of Columbus.
