WHEREAS, Calvin Joseph Higgins, Sr. is the Founder and former owner of the C & S Restaurant, 2753 E. 5th Ave. In his 25+ years in business, Calvin became an icon in the community for "The place in Ohio to get Real Down Home Soul Food;" and

WHEREAS, Calvin Joseph Higgins, Sr. originally from Memphis, Tennessee moved to Columbus, Ohio after receiving an Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force. Mr. Higgins and his former wife Sally raised their five children in the Eastgate community for many years; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the Coca Cola Bottling Company he purchased and established C & S Carryout. Because of his absolute love and expertise in cooking, a few years later he opened what would later gain the acclaim as one of the most well known establishments in the state of Ohio; "C & S Soul Food Restaurant." Over the next 25 plus years everyone that ever visited C & S would surely become a repeat customer. Many famous persons traveling through Columbus, made it a point to stop at C & S for a good, down-home, soul food meal. The C & S Restaurant was the only soul food restaurant in Ohio that had a sign on the interstate; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Higgins and his current wife, Terri, were known for hiring and mentoring persons who were unable to seek employment for several different reasons; homelessness; previous criminal records, unable to read and write; recovering from domestic situations etc; Mr. Higgins had a passion for helping children and the elderly. He made sure St. Thomas, Krumm Park, East Columbus School and the East Columbus Community Center received annual support for many different activities. The restaurant displayed the many trophies and acknowledgments thanking him for his many contributions; and
