Explanation
BACKGROUND:
This ordinance authorizes the Director of Development to enter into a grant agreement with Columbus Ohio Fire Fighter’s Museum, Inc. in an amount up to $200,000.00 for the purpose of renovating and restoring Engine House No. 16 to preserve the historical aspects of the building while expanding educational opportunities, modernizing utilities, and other building infrastructure. Firefighters and first responders work tirelessly and make significant sacrifices to protect Columbus residents and ensure all residents are safe. Preserving the history of firefighters in Columbus ensures we honor their work and sacrifice, while providing education on safety protocols and measures residents can take to promote the safety of our communities. As Columbus continues to grow and welcome more neighbors each year, it is crucial to preserve these historical aspects of the city to foster community and acknowledge and document our full history. Renovations and restoration to this space will ensure the preservation of a landmark and history with great significance to Columbus. Payments will be advanced on a predetermined schedule provided in the terms of the agreement.
Emergency action is necessary to ensure the payment per the commitment is made, allowing for the intended renovations to be completed per the organization’s renovation schedule. Renovations will allow for an important historical landmark to be preserved and ensure educational programs provided by the Columbus Ohio Fire Fighter’s Museum, Inc. can be continued.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funding is available with the Development Taxable Bonds Fund, 7739.
