Explanation

The Transportation Division is responsible for snow and ice control and removal on the City's roadway system. Rock salt is used extensively in this operation. Formal competitive bids were solicited and received and the Purchasing Office established a citywide universal term contract (FL003290) with Cargill, Incorporated - Deicing Technology (cc#41-0177680 expiring July 26, 2008), at a price of $41.51/ton (dumped) and $44.39/ton (piled).

It is necessary that the Transportation Division purchase additional rock salt. This ordinance authorizes the Finance Director to establish a purchase order for the purchase of rock salt for the Transportation Division consistent with the terms and conditions of the citywide term contract in the amount of $500,000.00.

Emergency action is requested in ensure an uninterrupted supply chain.

Fiscal Impact: This expense is budgeted in the Transportation Division's 2008 Municipal Motor Vehicle License Tax Fund. To date, the Division spent $898,000.00 during the winter of 2007 - 2008 for rock salt.
