Explanation
BACKGROUND: This ordinance authorizes the Director of the Department of Public Safety to accept a donation of $10,000.00 from the Columbus Foundation in support of the Mayor's Coalition for Nonviolent Columbus Program. This Coalition for Nonviolent Columbus program offers grants for one time costs for neighborhood led initiatives that address crime and safety within Columbus Neighborhoods.
This ordinance also authorizes the appropriation of $10,000.00 within Public Safety's Private Grant Fund and authorizes the Safety Director to enter into contract with Crime Stoppers and expend $10,000.00 for distribution of the donated funds to Columbus neighborhood-led initiatives that address crime and safety.
Emergency Designation: Emergency legislation is necessary to meet grant deadlines and make the funds available immediately for distribution to address crime prevention and safety initiatives.
FISCAL IMPACT: This legislation authorizes the Safety Director to accept $10,000.00 in donation, appropriate the funds and enter into contract with Crime Stoppers to distribute the donated funds to grant applicants. Ordinance 0322-2011, passed on 3/14/2011 allocated $45,000.00 in General Funds to Crime Stoppers for the same purpose.

To authorize and direct the Director of Public Safety to accept a donation of $10,000.00 from The Columbus Foundation in support of the Mayor's Coalition for Nonviolent Columbus; to authorize the appropriation of $10,000.00 within the unappropriated balance of the Private Grant Fund; to enter into contract with Central Ohio Crime Stoppers to provide funds to be distributed to community groups and organizations for crime prevention and safety programs; to authorize an expenditure of $10,000.00; and to declare an emergency.
