The Council of the City of Columbus recognizes, honors, and celebrates jazz music and jazz musicians for their contributions to the City of Columbus, and declares April as “Jazz Appreciation Month” and April 30 as “International Jazz Day” in the City of Columbus.

WHEREAS, jazz is a music genre that originated from African American communities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
WHEREAS, jazz music has produced some of America’s most innovative artistry and has inspired countless other types of artists.
WHEREAS, Jazz Appreciation Month was created in 2002 at the Smithsonian Museum to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz in the month of April.
WHEREAS, Jazz Appreciation Month is intended to excite and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz, to study the music, attend concerts, listen to recordings, and read books about jazz.
WHEREAS, in 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people in all corners of the globe.
WHEREAS, International Jazz Day brings together populations, schools, artists, historians, scholars, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots and future.
WHEREAS, International Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout April.
WHEREAS, Jazz Appreciation Month celebrates its 21st anniversary, A Tribe for Jazz will host a multitude of jazz performances, community service initiatives, and education programs in schools, libraries, community centers, and arts venues across the city.
