To  proclaim the month of April to be minority health month in the City of Columbus.
 
Body
 
WHEREAS, over the past 50 years, the United States has achieved significant increases in life expectancy and reductions in the incidence of injury, disability and disease; and
 
WHEREAS, the public health approach is credited with the majority of improvements in our health status and expanded life expectancy; and
 
WHEREAS, the gap between the health status and death rates for Caucasians and racial and ethnic minority population groups has not decreased and in some cases has widened; and
 
WHEREAS, April is Minority Health Month and the local theme is - Overcoming Obstacles for Life; and
 
WHEREAS, minority populations face substantial cultural, social, and economic barriers to obtaining access to adequate and competent health care; and  
 
WHEREAS, the excess burden of morbidity and mortality for minorities results in significant losses to our families, community and economy; now, therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby proclaim the month of April to be minority health month in the City of Columbus.
