To recognize the Shiloh Baptist Church Family Institute's 140th Anniversary Historic Publication.

WHEREAS, the Shiloh Family Institute, of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Columbus, Ohio, is sponsoring a humanities project entitled, "Shiloh's Legacy-A Reason to Come Home"; and
WHEREAS, Shiloh established 140 years ago in 1869, is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. This designation is not only because of the physical architectural significance of the building, but also because Shiloh has contributed and influenced the development and growth of the African American community, the City of Columbus, the State of Ohio; and
WHEREAS, initial research indicates a great need for capturing, recording and updating the history of African Americans in Columbus and the State of Ohio; and
WHEREAS, the Shiloh Family Institute, a non-profit outreach entity, established to meet the social, economic and other basic needs of the surrounding community, has formed the 140th Anniversary Publication Committee to implement the celebration of Shiloh's longevity in the community; and
WHEREAS, the institute has operated or organized various programs that allow Shiloh to demonstrate its mission and practices of helping those in need;
WHEREAS, the project will research, record, and document oral histories of both church members and community residents, providing an accurate history of Shiloh and a valuable addition to the history of the neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, this project will enhance understanding of Columbus. Specifically, it will make clear the history of the African American community in Columbus; now, Therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby acknowledge Shiloh Baptist Church's involvement in the city, the state and nation and recognizes the need of Shiloh Baptist Church Family Institute's 140th Anniversary Historic Publication.
