Explanation
BACKGROUND: The Department of Human Resources, in collaboration with the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, is requesting to expend $500,000.00 between January and December 2026 for the purpose of reimbursing the Department of Recreation and Parks for each employee that registers for a fitness and gym pass to access one of the City’s 20 Get Active fitness centers and open gyms at one of the City’s 27 community centers. The expenditure will also support employer-sponsored sporting activities through City of Columbus Recreation and Parks for City of Columbus employees.
The Department of Human Resources is dedicated to the wellness of our employees. This collaboration will support that goal, while using internal city opportunities and creating an ongoing partnership.
FISCAL IMPACT: Sufficient funds are available in the Employee Benefits Fund 5502 for this expense This ordinance is contingent on the passage of the 2026 insurance appropriation ordinance 3195-2025.

To authorize the expenditure of $500,000.00 from the Employee Benefits Fund or so much thereof as may be necessary for the purpose of reimbursing the Department of Recreation and Parks for City employees who register for a fitness and gym pass and employer-sponsored sporting activities. WHEREAS, it is necessary to authorize the expenditure of $500,000.00, or so much therefore as may be necessary, to pay costs for the collaboration between the Department of Human Resources and Department of Recreation and Parks;
Now, Therefore,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
SECTION 1. That for the purpose of providing City of Columbus employees with fitness and gym passes and employer-sponsored sporting activities, effective January 1, 2026, the expenditure of $500,000.00 is hereby authorized within the Employee Benefits Fund.
