To honor and recognize the ALPHA Minority Youth Engineering Program and the John E. Foster Minority Scholarship.
Body
WHEREAS, the ALPHA Minority Youth Engineering Program is an engineering preparatory program for minority high school juniors and seniors in the Franklin County area; and
WHEREAS, the ALPHA Minority Youth Engineering Program includes a weekly lecture series that takes place at the Point of Pride Building that covers a wide array of engineering topics, speakers coming from local firms as well as collegiate engineering students; and
WHEREAS, students in the ALPHA Minority Youth Engineering Program engage in projects and workshops to further develop their understanding and skills as well as take field trips to various engineering and construction sites in the Columbus area; and
WHEREAS, the ALPHA Minority Youth Engineering Program is a feeder to the John E. Foster Minority Scholarship; and
WHEREAS, the John E. Foster Minority Scholarship pays for the college engineering education for qualified recipients at both Columbus State Community College and The Ohio State University; and
WHEREAS, the John E. Foster Minority Scholarship was named in honor of the late John E. Foster who was the first prominent African-American civil engineers in Columbus who at one time owned the largest minority-owned engineering firm in the city; and
WHEREAS, the John E. Foster Minority Scholarship was established by local and minority engineering firms to encourage minority students to pursue engineering careers and to give back to the community; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
That this Council does hereby honor and recognize the ALPHA Minority Youth Engineering Program and the John E. Foster Minority Scholarship.
