WHEREAS, celebrating Earth Day represents all of the hard work that has been done and will continue to be done to protect our planet and keep our families safe. In 2025, Earth Day’s theme is OUR POWER, OUR PLANET; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970; and

WHEREAS, in 1872, Arbor Day was first established by the Nebraska Board of Agriculture as a special day to be set aside for the planting of trees; and

WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world each year on April 25; and

WHEREAS, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is dedicated to connecting our community to nature, wellness and creativity; and

WHEREAS, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department through their Conservation team and Forestry section provides care for thousands of trees, plants thousands of native plants and trees dozens of pollinator habitats, and conducts hundreds of sustainability focused programs across our city for our residents; and

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus, through its Sustainable Columbus office, is committed to imparting equity and environmental justice through strong climate action and is guided by the Columbus Climate Action Plan which has a community-wide goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 and 45% reduction in emissions by 2050; and

WHEREAS, the City of Columbus Climate Action Plan has strategies and goals around increasing access to green space, increasing the tree canopy in alignment with the City’s Urban Forestry Master Plan, and increasing the number of native plants present in the city, all to assist in the fight against climate change; and

WHEREAS, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department will host their Annual Earth Day and Arbor Day Event on Friday, April 25 from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm at Woodward...
