To honor and recognize April 23rd as Granville T. Woods day in the City of Columbus

WHEREAS, in 2015, Rickenbacker Woods Foundation worked with City Council to recognize Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, establishing a civic acknowledgment that has endured and strengthened public understanding of his legacy, In that same spirit of balanced historic recognition, Granville T. Woods - one of the most important inventors in American history - merits similar annual civic acknowledgment, and

 

WHEREAS, Granville T. Woods’ contributions to electrical and railway systems transformed modern transportation and infrastructure. His legacy aligns directly with Columbus’ continued focus on innovation, workforce development, and youth empowerment; and

 

WHEREAS, Rickenbacker Woods Foundation is organizing Citywide Granville T. Woods Week (April 20-25, 2026), a coordinated initiative connecting historic recognition with education, youth leadership, and hands-on STEAM programming; and

 

WHEREAS, Woods’ legacy continues to inspire innovation, sustainability, and workforce pathways for the next generation; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council hereby honors and recognizes April 23rd as Granville T. Woods Day in the City of Columbus.
