To Celebrate and Recognize the Numerous Contributions of Essential Workers and declare March 15, 2025 as Essential Workers Day

WHEREAS, on March 11, 2025 will mark 5 years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic; and
WHEREAS, March 15, 2025 marks the five year anniversary of the national shutdown of the coronavirus pandemic; and
WHEREAS, amid the?coronavirus pandemic, essential workers redefined what it truly means to show up for your neighbor. When residents were encouraged to stay at home to be safe, essential workers did not have that option. Essential workers gave the nation a new understanding of and appreciation for the vital jobs they do and the services they provide our communities every single day; and
WHEREAS, essential workers work in through out various sectors including, but not limited to food and agriculture, emergency services, transportation, health care, community-based services, water and wastewater management, refuse management, and critical manufacturing; and
WHEREAS, prior, during and post since the?coronavirus pandemic, essential workers are called upon during times of need, emergencies and inclement weather, to ensure the City of Columbus is still providing the vital services and programs residents rely on; and
WHEREAS, the essential workers who make the City of Columbus economy function, are disproportionately women, low paid workers, under-educated workers, and workers of color; and
WHEREAS, the City of Columbus must continue to support our essential workers by continuing to remove systemic barriers, and strengthening the social safety net; and
WHEREAS, on March 15, 2025, residents of the City of Columbus are encouraged to show appreciation to all the essential workers whose efforts may have gone unnoticed; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council is beyond thankful for our city’s essential workers and does hereby celebrate and recognize the ...
