WHEREAS, Margaret (Marguerette) Lucile Whiteside Johnson was born on October 16, 1921 in Harriman, Tennessee to the union of Fred and Johnnie Whiteside.   Margaret was the eldest of three children; sister, Virginia and brother, Fred.  She was baptized as a toddler in the Tennessee River and moved to Columbus, Ohio as a young child.  She married Fred D. Johnson, Sr. on June 28, 1940.  There were nine children from this union; Phyllis, Freda Ann, Fred Jr., Beverly, Jacqueline, Sharon, Nanette, Karen and Don.  She has 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and
 
WHEREAS, since 1941, Margaret has been a faithful member of Love Zion Baptist Church.  She particularly enjoyed her service on the Board of the Nurse Corps.   She was active in the schools and community.  She was a founding member of The Concerned Parents, a community organization at St. Stephen's Community House; and
 
WHEREAS, Margaret has been a life-long caregiver.  As a youngster, she dutifully read the Bible to her illiterate grandmother, who was a preacher.  She lovingly provided care for her grandmother, mother and sister.  Her untiring devotion and care of her husband, Fred, during his struggle with cancer, is but one testament to Margaret's love and courage.  Margaret was loved by many.  She enjoyed her life and was always willing to help other people.  Her philosophy was "Life is just what you make it!"; and  
 
WHEREAS, we are sad that she has departed this life, we rejoice in knowing that God has her in His tender, loving arms; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That this Council does hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Honorable Margaret Lucile Whiteside Johnson.
