To Celebrate the 111th Anniversary of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Founder’s Day

WHEREAS, the Delta Signma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University by twenty-two collegiate women upon following ideals comprising its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust: economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement; and,
WHEREAS, political involvement and advocacy to uplift and empower Black women was integral aspect of the organization’s creation, with the first public act of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority being at the Women’s Sufferage March in March 1913 and its early programming focused on increasing educational opportunities for Black women; and,
WHEREAS, the Columbus (OH) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was established in May 1934 to serve the community’s needs and is committeed to the tenants of sisterhood, scholarship, and public service; and,
WHEREAS, tThroughout Columbus, the CAC provides numerous educational and enriching programs such as the Shirley Chisholm Conference for Girls in Government, the Dr. Betty Shabazs Delta Academy, Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS, EMBODI, and the Alexa Canady Doctors & Dentist Conference; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Columbus is grateful for Delta Sigma Theta’s contributions to the community, especially their mission of promoting collective political action and advocacy toward a more just and equitable future; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council hereby celebrates the 111th Anniversary of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Founder’s Day.
