Title

To join the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, the Columbus Historic Preservation Office, and the Columbus Historical Society to recognize the historic significance of the Original Airport Terminal building located at 420 East Fifth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio.

Body

WHEREAS, on July 8, 1979, Port Columbus celebrated its 50th Anniversary by listing the Original Airport Terminal Building ('Terminal') on the National Registry of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, the Columbus Historic Preservation Office, and the Columbus Historical Society have collaborated to formally recognize the original Terminal, honoring its significance and contributions to the Airport and the greater Columbus community it served from 1929 to 1958; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, plans to adopt a resolution recognizing the Terminal on June 26, 2007; and

WHEREAS, the Terminal represents a milestone in the history of American passenger travel as the site of the first air trip operated by Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT) on July 8, 1929; and

WHEREAS, that first transcontinental trip began in New York City, where Columbus-bound passengers traveled by train, arriving at the Terminal to board two Ford Tri-Motor airplanes named "City of Columbus" and "City of Wichita" to Waynoka, Oklahoma, then boarded a train bound for Clovis, New Mexico, finally reaching Los Angeles by plane; and

WHEREAS, the Terminal will be the site of a ceremony on June 26, 2007, when a historic marker will be dedicated to permanently recognize the Terminal as a historic place within the Columbus community; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:

That this Council does hereby recognize the historical significance of the Original Airport Terminal building located at 420 East Fifth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be presented ...
