To honor, recognize, and celebrate the life of Mike Jackson and to extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends for his passing.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Mike Jackson was a compassionate, thoughtful reporter and voice for the residents of Columbus, and

WHEREAS, Mike Jackson hosted engaging civic events, including an annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and

WHEREAS, Mike Jackson was born in 1956 in Charleston, West Virginia; and Mike received an Associate Arts degree in mass communication from West Virginia State College; and

WHEREAS, Mike started his 40-year career in broadcasting at WCHS-AM in his hometown of West Virginia and was the late evening news anchor for WOAY-TV in Oak Hill, West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Mike came to Columbus and joined NBC 4 in 1994 and became a longtime evening news host, anchoring the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news and hosting the segment “Better Call Jackson”; and

WHEREAS, Mike has received many awards for his reporting including a first-place award from the National Association of Black Journalists, four local Emmy nominations, two-second place awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Tribute to African American Committee; and

WHEREAS, the Community was saddened when Mike left the air in January 2019; and

WHEREAS, Mike was known as a beloved storyteller for who fought for answers and results for Central Ohio viewers; and

WHEREAS, Mike’s presence and spirit will be missed - he is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dawn; two daughters, Nicole Jackson Tubbs and Courtney Jackson Earlwine; nine grandchildren; and a cousin whom he viewed as a brother, Norman “Eddie” Jackson; other family and countless friends; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council does hereby honor, recognize, and celebrate the life of Mr. Mike Jackson, and extends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends on his passing.
