To declare May 19, 2009 as Ohio Asian American Health Coalition Awareness Day.

WHEREAS, on May 19, 2009, The Ohio Asian American Health Coalition will join millions of people across the globe to recognize the serious impact of Hepatitis B, a disease that disproportionately affects people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent; and
 
WHEREAS, according to the Stanford Asian Liver Center 50% of the current 1.3 million in the nation with Hepatitis B are Asian American, with 1 out of 10 Asian Americans carrying Hepatitis B; and
 
WHEREAS, Asian Americans are 100 times more likely to be chronic carriers and 4 times more likely to die from Hepatitis B; and
 
WHEREAS, in Ohio, it is estimated that 14,000 to 16,000 Asian and Pacific Islanders are living with Hepatitis B, and many are unaware of their status; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
 
That we do hereby declare May 19, 2009 as Ohio Asian American Health Coalition Awareness Day, and do recognize the serious impact of Hepatitis B which disproportionately affects people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent.
