To Congratulate Joe Wing as the 2026 George Meany Award Recipient
Body
WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards Banquet, the largest labor recognition of its kind in the country, is a night for the Central Ohio AFL-CIO and the United Way Community Services Department to recognize local business and labor leaders who have given outstanding volunteer service to the community; and
WHEREAS, The George Meany Awards, named after the late George Meany, former President of the national AFL-CIO, are presented by the Central Ohio AFL-CIO to a labor person for outstanding leadership and support of health, welfare and recreation services to the Central Ohio Community; and
WHEREAS, Joe Wing has been a lifelong union activist, dedicating his career to amplifying the voices of his union brothers and sisters and strengthening the labor movement; and
WHEREAS, throughout his years of service for the members of OCSEA, Joe has served as a steward, a chapter treasurer, member of the State Board of Directors, and on numerous committees, always ensuring the needs and interests of union members were represented and championed; and
WHEREAS, many who know Joe fondly refer to him as the “Book of Joe” in recognition of his vast knowledge, unwavering commitment and ability to guide others through the union’s history and its foreseeable future; and
WHEREAS, in 2025, Joe was awarded with the first-ever Jean Fightmaster Leadership Award, recognizing his lifetime of championing union activism and service; and
WHEREAS, even in his retirement as OCSEA member, Joe continues to serve as Treasurer for ODOT Chapter 2513 and the OCSEA/ODOT Assembly, demonstrating that his commitment to labor and public service remains strong as ever after all these years; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That we hereby congratulate Joe Wing as the 2026 George Meany Award recipient.
