Explanation
BACKGROUND: This legislation authorizes the Director of the Department of Public Safety to enter into an agreement with CSX Transportation to accept grant funds awarded in the 2024 Pride In Service Grant program. The Columbus Division of Fire Hazardous Materials team has been awarded $5,000.00 in grant funding to facilitate the purchase of equipment used in response to railway emergencies throughout the City of Columbus and Ohio Region 4. These funds were provided in the form of a check written to the Columbus Division of Fire. The City of Columbus is not required to match this award with any amount of funds. The official city program contact authorized to act in connection with this $5,000.00 grant is Firefighter Michael Taylor.
Emergency Designation: Emergency legislation is requested so that the purchases of equipment may be made within the grant cycle.

To authorize the Director of the Department of Public Safety to accept a grant from CSX Transportation; to authorize the City Auditor to appropriate $5,000.00 within the unallocated balance of the Division of Fire grant fund, and to declare an emergency. ($5,000.00).

WHEREAS, in May 2024, the city received a grant from CSX Transportation; and
WHEREAS, an emergency exists in the usual daily operation of the Division of Fire, Department of Public Safety, in that is it immediately necessary in the usual daily operation of the Department of Public Safety to authorize the Director to accept this grant, so that said purchases can be made within the grant cycle and for the preservation of the public health, peace, property, safety, and welfare:; NOW, THEREFORE
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS:
SECTION 1. That the Director of the Department of Public Safety is hereby authorized and directed to accept a grant award of $5,000.00 from CSX Transportation.
