To Recognize the Historic 150th Anniversary of the Founding of Broad Street United Methodist Church
Body
WHEREAS, in 1875, following the Civil War, the United Methodist Church expanded in Columbus by opening a new building on the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue in the downtown area; and,
WHEREAS, in 1980, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of the architecturally unique use of green serpentine stone in the Gothic Revival style; and,
WHEREAS, the BSUMC holds a significant place in Columbus history as being the home church to US President William McKinley during his service as Governor of Ohio; and,
WHEREAS, through 150 years of serving Columbus residents on the East Side, the church has come to be known as “The Church in the Heart of the City with the City in its Heart!”; and,
WHEREAS, the Heart of the City Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of the church, organizing and providing free services to over 30,000 downtown residents every year, such as meals, legal services, and multicultural reading education; and,
WHEREAS, for over 20 years, Manna Café, an outreach ministry of the church, has served food, fellowship, and love for those in need in downtown Columbus, with over 130,000 meals served; and,
WHEREAS, BSUMC proudly welcomes people of all ages, sexual orientations, gender identities, races, economic abilities, and mental and physical capacities; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS,
That this Council does hereby recognize the 150th anniversary of Broad Street United Methodist Church and celebrates a century and a half of their dedication to serving Columbus residents.
