To Celebrate the Centenary of Ann B. Walker and Honor Her Legacy of Achievements

 

Body

WHEREAS, Ann B. Walker is a Columbus Native, graduating from East High School and later attaining her Bachelor’s Degree from George Williams College and pursuing a historic career in journalism; and,

WHEREAS, in 1949, Ms. Walker began her career working at the Ohio Sentinel, one of Columbus’s first Black-owned newspapers as an editor and columnist; and,

 

WHEREAS, throughout her time as a journalist, Ms. Walker interviewed a host of notable individuals including Angela Davis, Martin Luther King Jr., and President Jimmy Carter, and made history as the first female in broadcast management at WLWC-TV and broadcaster to report on the Ohio Legislature; and,

 

WHEREAS, her career eventually lead Ms. Walker to being appointed as Media Director of the Community Services Agency within Jimmy Carter’s Presidential Administration, becoming the first Black women from Franklin County to receive a White House appointment; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1991, Ms. Walker established her own company, Ann B. Walker and Associates; and

 

WHEREAS, throughout her lifetime, Ms. Walker has been affiliated with a number of local organizations, serving on the Boards of the Columbus Area Leadership Laboratory, Columbus Planned Parenthood, Columbus Metropolitan Club, the Leukemia Society, and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, becoming the first Black women to do so; and,

 

WHEREAS, her legacy and service to the community has helped shaped the City to what it is today, and the City remains grateful for her leadership and courage: Now, therefore, be it: and,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBUS: That this Council celebrates the centenary of Ann B. Walker and honor her legacy of achievements.
